ABOUT DIRK

Dirk Karsten is an internationally recognised Dutch photographer, visual artist, and creative director whose career spans more than four decades across commercial photography, film direction, and contemporary art.

His journey began at the age of fourteen during a family trip to North Africa. Handed a camera by his parents, he became fascinated by the ability to capture people, places, and moments in time. What began as curiosity quickly developed into a lifelong passion, ultimately shaping an international creative career.

Over the following decades, Karsten established himself as one of the leading figures in advertising photography and commercial filmmaking. His work has been commissioned by major global brands including McDonald’s, Honda, Harley-Davidson, and Jumeirah Hotels, while earning close to 300 awards and industry accolades worldwide.

His achievements include a Clio Award, Gold and Silver Lucie Awards, and recognition from Art Directors Clubs and media organisations around the world. His work has appeared on the cover and within every edition of 200 Best Advertising Photographers Worldwide and has been published in leading industry annuals including Communication Arts, Graphis, and Lürzer’s Archive.

Having achieved significant commercial success, Karsten increasingly turned his attention towards fine art and contemporary visual expression, seeking a more personal and meaningful form of storytelling. His artistic practice explores themes of identity, memory, culture, place, and human experience, combining technical mastery with emotional depth and conceptual thinking.

His work has been exhibited internationally and can be found in museums and private collections worldwide. In 2017, his work was presented in Venice during the Biennale Arte context as part of PERSONAL STRUCTURES – Open Borders, an international exhibition presented by the GAA Foundation and hosted by the European Cultural Centre across Palazzo Bembo, Palazzo Mora, and Giardini Marinaressa. His international profile was further strengthened through an exhibition organised by the Dutch Embassy in Oman.

Today, Karsten continues to create work that bridges artistic expression and visual excellence. Drawing on a lifetime behind the camera, his work invites viewers to look beyond the surface and engage with the stories, emotions, and atmospheres that shape the human experience.

Alongside his personal artistic practice, Karsten is also the creative force behind the David Grant Collection, a curated body of contemporary visual art created for collectors, galleries, and interior spaces. The collection allows him to explore a broader visual language while maintaining the same focus on atmosphere, storytelling, and refined presentation.

His career stands as a rare example of creative reinvention, combining decades of commercial mastery with an enduring commitment to artistic exploration, visual storytelling, and the pursuit of meaningful artistic expression.
